Prithvi Shaw: 10 things to know about India's latest batting superstar
Prithvi Shaw made his debut in the Rajkot Test match against West Indies on Thursday.
Prithvi Shaw has become India's latest batting superstar with a dream debut against West Indies on Thursday at Rajkot. He became the youngest Indian to make a century on Test debut. He is the 15th Indian batsman to score a hundred on his debut in Test cricket.
Shaw was called up to the India squad for the final Test of this summer’s series against England, an indication, not only of the esteem he is held in but also the struggles of India’s top order against the likes of Jimmy Anderson and Stuart Broad.
The call didn’t come at the Oval. When it finally came on Thursday, Shaw didn’t disappoint reaching his century off just 99 balls.
The 18-year-old Shaw has been earmarked for great things ever since he was a prodigious run-maker in the Mumbai maidans. He captained India in the Under-19 World Cup, and began his first-class career with a hundred in the fourth innings of the semi-final of the Ranji Trophy last year.
He has played only 14 first-class games, but that has been enough for the selectors to recognise he is ready for Test cricket. He has scored 1418 runs at an average of 56.72. And he has done so in a dominant fashion, going at a strike rate of 76.69.
