Jama Masjid was built during the Mughal era. Mughal emperor Shah Jahan commissioned the construction of the Jama Masjid in the 17th century.

It is believed that the construction of Jama Masjid, located in Shahjahanabad (now Old Delhi) was started in 1644.

With the help of approximately 5000 workers, the construction of Jama Masjid was completed by 1656.
