Grace Neutral, a tattoo artist and activist, gives a glimpse into the illegal tattooing scene of South Korea.
South Korea has strict laws barring tattoo art and it requires the tattoo artists to be doctors.
Uploaded by the fashion label i-D on YouTube, this video gives a glimpse into the lives of youth in South Korea navigating alternative ideas of beauty.
Hosted by tattoo artist and activist Grace Neutral, the video talks about the younger rebellious generation striving towards self-expression and the general populace that ostracises anyone with a tattoo (read - anything out of "normal"). It speaks of tattoo as an art form and a medium of self-expression and not exactly as a way of displaying a brash message of living a "thug-life". For some, it is, as Grace says, "being comfortable in one's skin".
Watch the video and do spend a moment on thinking about how social programming on the idea of beauty has warped our appreciation of it.
