Well-known activist and Pakistani politician from Kerala BM Kutty passed away in Karachi on Sunday. He was 89 years old and migrated to Pakistan from Kerala’s Tirur.

The eldest of five siblings in a Malayali Muslim family of peasants and landowners, he was dyed-in-the-wool socialist and leftist who joined the Kerala Students Federation affiliated to the Communist Party.

In Pakistan, he was associated with the Pakistan Awami League and the National Awami Party and served as joint secretary-general of the Movement for Restoration of Democracy for three years.

He came into the limelight in 2011 for his political autobiography where he explained why he chose to stay in Pakistan.

Kerala CM Vijaya paid tribute to him: “He (Kutty) was born in Tirur (in Malappuram district) and later emigrated to Pakistan and emerged as a major figure in Pakistan's politics, he was also a prominent journalist and a determined leader who fought for peace and against communalism."

He is survived by his wife and four children.
