CARACAS: At least 17 people were killed and 28 injured in central Venezuela on Saturday when a packed bus veered off a highway and crashed into a mountainside, rescue services said.

Ricardo Hernandez, director of the civil protection agency in Carabobo state, said it was not yet known why the driver had lost control of the bus, which was 155 miles (250 km) west of Caracas when the accident happened.

Bus crashes are frequent on Venezuela's dangerous roads.
