In a bizarre move, a US-based company has given out Christmas bonuses in the form of handguns, ABC news reported.

BenShot, a father-and-son business that makes bulletproof drinking glasses, gave their employees the handgun of their choice.

"I wanted to ensure all our employees were safe and happy. A handgun was the perfect gift," Ben Wolfgram, the owner of the company said of his 'close-knit' team.

Among the products BenShot manufactures are bulletproof shot glasses with a bullet embedded in the side. Their Instagram page, too, has pictures of their products, but one particular post of Hillary Clinton, who has been a staunch critic of the ease at which guns can be purchased in the United States, grabbed eyeballs.

Naturally, people weren't too amused on social media. And this is what people had to say.

Last month, a gunman opened fire at a synagogue in the US city of Pittsburgh, killing at least 11 people and injuring several others including four policemen, in the deadliest "anti-Semitic attack" in America in years.

The shooter, Robert Bowers, 46, surrendered after he was injured during an exchange of fire with the police, according to local media reports.

In June 2017, PEW Research Centre put out data on the procurement of guns in the United States. According to data available, three-in-ten American adults say they currently own a gun, and another 11% say they don’t personally own a gun but live with someone who does. Among those who don’t currently own a gun, about half say they could see themselves owning one in the future.

Although the United States has less than 5% of the world’s population, it has anything between 35% and 50% of the world’s civilian-owned guns, according to a 2007 report by the Switzerland-based Small Arms Survey. Not surprisingly, the nation has the unenviable record of highest homicide-by-firearm rate among the world’s most developed nations.
