The underwater quake yesterday hit off the Fox Islands, by the Aleutian Trench, more than 1,500 kilometers (1,000 miles) west of Anchorage, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said.

The quake had a depth of 11 kilometers and struck at 5:49 pm (0449 GMT today), USGS said.

The National Tsunami Warning Centre noted the quake but did not issue an alert and nor did the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre.
