A suspected shooter and two others were killed in gunfire exchange with security forces on Friday at Naval Air Station Pensacola, a major base of the United States (US) Navy in  Florida. At least seven others were also wounded in the incident, authorities said. This marks the second shooting at a US military installation in this week, following the attack on Pearl Harbour, Hawaii, on Thursday.

Escambia County sheriff's office on Friday said that an 'active shooter' was encountered on the base in the morning. A few minutes later, the shooter was reported dead.

A local news channel, WEAR TV, reported that the sheriff's deputies had gunned down the shooter, meanwhile the base remained on lockdown. Seven injured people were being treated at the Baptist Hospital, the news channel added. Ascension Sacred Heart Hospital Pensacola spokesperson Mike Burke said that the injured were expected at the trauma centre of the hospital.

A White House spokesperson later informed that US President Donald Trump has been briefed regarding the incident and was monitoring the situation.

The Pensacola base, which is near Florida`s border with Alabama, is a major training site for the Navy and home to its aerobatic flight demonstration squadron, the Blue Angels. The base employs more than about 16,000 military and 7,400 civilian personnel, according to the base`s website.

A gunman was reported to have opened fire at the US Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam (JBPHH) in Hawaii on Thursday. The attack left two civilians dead and another in a critical condition undergoing urgent medical care. Reports later pointed to the fact that the gunman was likely a US Navy sailor, and authorities said that the victims, both dead and the injured, were civilian employees of the US Department of Defense.
