In what can only be called an unfortunate piece of news, a man died after being bitten by a shark at a popular beach on Australia's northwest coast, authorities said on Sunday.

The incident occurred at Cable beach on Australia's northwest coast.

"Police can confirm that tragically the man has died," Western Australia police said in a statement.

According to CNN, the man was recovered from the water and was treated by local police before the arrival of St. John Ambulance, but the man tragically died as a result of the injuries inflicted by the shark.

Due to the shark attack, beaches have been closed from  Dampier Creek to Coconut Wells.

It is to be noted that shark attacks are rare on Cable Beach. This particular beach is a popular tourist attraction, with a 22-kilometre (13-mile) stretch of pristine white sand next to the town of Broome.

The local authorities have advised the public at the beach to show caution, and report any shark sightings to the police

With the death of the man, fatality related to shark attacks rose up to eight in Australian waters this year. To put things into perspective, last year there was deaths resulting from shark attacks
