The routine exercise was launched from Eglin Air Force Base, some 50 miles (80 km) east of Pensacola, and rescue workers have discovered some of the debris, NBC News said citing base spokesman Andy Bourland. The Marines were part of a special operations unit based out of Camp Lejeune in North Carolina, while the other troops were part of Louisiana's Army National Guard, NBC News said.

Reuters could not independently verify the report. A base spokesman was not immediately available to provide details.
