Prince Philip, 90, was due to be present with Queen Elizabeth and other members of the royal family at the concert this evening.

The announcement came as over 10,000 people assembled outside the Buckingham Palace for the concert.

Top artistes such as Sir Paul McCartney and Sir Elton John are due to perform, which will be carried to millions live through television.

Prince Philip was an active and keen participant in the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant yesterday.

He was treated for a blocked coronary artery in December.
