NEW YORK: A leading organisation of non resident Indians (NRIs) has strongly condemned the reported demolition of some Hindu temples in Malaysia, asserting that Islam does not permit destroying of places of worship.

In a letter to Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmed Badwai, released here on Thursday, NRIs for Secular and Harmonious India demanded that zoning and other laws in Malaysia should fully respect the rights of minorities and ensure that their religious places are well protected.

Expressing 'great dismay and concern' over reports of demolition, the letter branded the action as 'unfortunate disregard of rights and sentiments of an important patriotic segment' of Malaysia.

"We hope and pray that you will stop the illegal demolitions of the Hindu temples in Malaysia and not allow tarnishing of the good international image of your respected country," the letter said.

"Islam does not permit destruction of places of worship. Prophet Mohammed did not demolish any synagogues in Medina. Malaysia is noted and respected for its pluralistic ethos and ethnic unity; it is regarded as a modern progressive and peaceful nation in the international community," it said.
