Norway may introduce a third gender option on passports
Norwegian Labour Party's youth wing wants a new category - 'hen'.
For people who do not identify as male or female, the Norwegian Labour Party is considering a third gender category on passports and various other official documents.
The Independent reported the party's youth wing wants a new category -'hen'. It is a pronoun used in Sweden since 1966 to replace he or she when an individual's gender is unknown. 'Hen' sparked controversy in Sweden when it was officially adopted by parliament in April 2015.
Mani Hussaini, Labour youth leader said Norwegians had the right to identify as what they want. "I believe that all people should be allowed to live out their identity," said Hussaini is quoted as saying by the Independent. Adding, "The law should adapt to reality rather than the other way around."
The new category he believes will allow people who do not identify with the gender binary to live freely and will have a "legal opportunity to get a third gender".
Attempts in 2016 to introduce the third category officially in Norway by social-liberal party Venstre had failed.
