SEOUL: North Korea warned on Tuesday of "merciless" blows against any country infringing on its sovereignty in connection with new United Nations sanctions, the official KCNA news agency reported.

"As we have declared already, we will carry out our responsibility to achieve the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula," a foreign ministry spokesman said, quoted by the agency.

"However we will deliver merciless blows without hesitation to whoever tries to breach our sovereignty and right to survive under the excuse of carrying out the UN Security Council resolution," he said.

"We will watch US movements and take corresponding action."

North Korea said it considered the UN resolution imposing sanctions over its nuclear weapons test to be a declaration of war on the country

"The UNSC 'resolution,' needless to say, cannot be construed otherwise than a declaration of a war against the DPRK," the statement said.
