A mortar attack today killed at least six persons, including women and children, while injuring several others at Hangu in northwest Pakistan.
Local residents said mortar shells fired from the mountains of the Orakzai tribal region slammed into two houses in Hangu, a town in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province which has been a flashpoint for sectarian clashes between Sunnis and Shias.
State-run PTV said six persons were killed and several others injured in the attack.
Other TV news channels reported nine persons were killed and 10 others injured in the attack. It could not immediately be ascertained who fired the mortars.
Several women and at least two children were among the dead. Officials said the dead included Shias and Sunnis. The injured were taken to a nearby hospital.
The attack occurred despite tight security measures put in place for the Islamic holy month of Muharram, which has often been marred by sectarian and militant violence against Shias. Hangu has witnessed several attacks on Shias in the past.
