Malaysian IT consultant to digitalise heritage Tamil inscriptions for posterity

A globetrotting Malaysian-born information technology (IT) consultant, Subhashini Tremmel has embarked on an ambitious initiative to preserve ancient Tamil heritage in digital format.

Tremmel, currently residing in Germany, is sourcing the archaic priceless materials, which are sprinkled across the globe.

"Many ancient Tamil texts are in the form of inscriptions and our Tamil Heritage Foundation is trying to preserve these materials in digital form for the future generations," the New Straits Times quoted Tremmel, as saying.

The members of Tamil Heritage Foundation are spread all over the world, which aims to create awareness of Tamil history among the globally spread Tamil community.

The project was started in 2002 in England and managed to digitalise nearly 13 rare ancient Tamil books found in British libraries.

Subashini and her team have digitalised nearly 7,000 palm leaves whose contents are as old as 150 to 200 years, over the last six years. 

"We need to preserve these valuable ancient knowledge, especially on online, so the knowledge can be spread internationally," Subhashini added.

The IT expert, who works for an international computer giant, started her pet project after she found out how the 13th century Bible was well preserved in the Czech Republic.
