Canada has unveiled a special memorial for the victims of the 1985 Air India bombing that killed 329 people, mostly of Indian origin, to mark the 26th anniversary of the Kanishka tragedy.

The fourth Air India memorial was unveiled in Lachine, Quebec, as Indo-Canadians yesterday remembered the victims of the worst terror case in the country's history when Air India Flight 182 exploded off the Irish coast on June 23, 1985.

A special ceremony was held at Lachine where Narinder Chauhan, deputy high commissioner of India in Canada, unveiled the fourth Air India memorial.

It is built on a slight hill looking out towards Lake St. Louis, providing a peaceful place to remember and reflect.

Endorsed by the families of the victims, this project is supported by the government of Canada and built on a land provided by Parks Canada.

Memorial services were also held in Toronto and Ottawa where hundreds of people, including politicians, diplomats and family members of the victims, gathered to pay homage to those who lost their lives.

The 329 killed in the tragedy included 280 Canadian citizens, mostly of Indian birth or descent, and 22 Indians.
