US vice president Joe Biden told disaffected liberals within his own Democratic Party on Monday to "buck up" and "stop whining" ahead of November 2 congressional elections in which Republicans are trying to regain control of Congress.
President Barack Obama a week ago expressed exasperation with parts of the liberal base that helped sweep him to power in the 2008 presidential election, and Biden pressed the matter anew.
During a political appearance in New Hampshire, Biden directed comments at members of his own party's base constituency who feel that Obama has not delivered on promises since coming to power in January 2009.
According to Politico, Biden said they should "stop whining and get out there and look at the alternatives" - referring to Republican candidates trying to take control of the House of Representatives and Senate from the Democrats.
"So those who ... didn't get everything they wanted, it's time to just buck up here, understand that we can make things better, continue to move forward, but not yield the playing field to those folks who are against everything that we stand for in terms of the initiatives we put forward," Biden said later on Monday during an interview on the MSNBC cable TV channel.
While conservatives have been Obama's loudest critics, with some branding him a socialist, liberal commentators have become more vocal in complaining that he has not fought hard enough for some of their priorities.
They say he was wrong to drop a new government-run insurance program from his landmark healthcare overhaul, should have gone further in cracking down on Wall Street, and has not done enough to end the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, reform immigration, battle climate change and close the military jail at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba.
Referring to the Republicans, Biden said, "These guys, if they win - the other team - they''re going to repeal healthcare."
Biden said he wanted the president's liberal critics to explain why they think the president's healthcare overhaul was not "an incredibly significant" and progressive move that is already helping people.
"It's the same way with a lot of other issues. It's time to focus. This is a choice. The president has done a remarkable job," Biden said.
Earlier this month, Obama suggested that detractors in his political base need to be more realistic.
He said when he hears Democrats "griping and groaning" about provisions that did not make it into the healthcare plan or financial reform and that he has not ended the war in Afghanistan, he thinks, "Folks, wake up."
