According to a BBC reports, an official from Indonesia's Information Ministry said that Tumblr was shut down without having a consultation with the firm. While other social networks have restrictions to display pornographic content, Tumblr actually allows such content on its site.

Commenting on the ban, the communication ministry's e-business director, Azhar Hasyim said, "After an exhaustive study, the ministry has decided to ban Tumblr since it contains many videos and pornographic images."

Along with the Yahoo-owned company, the Indonesian government has also decided to ban around 477 other online sites which display pornographic content. Azhar also said that blocking access to all these sites will take two to three days.

A week ago, Indonesia government had also asked for the removal of emoticons representing homosexuality in the messaging applications like Whatsapp.
