The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic followed by a possible third wave has led Google to extend the work from home option for its employees till January 10, 2022. The announcement was made by Google CEO Sundar Pichai in an email to the employees.
Returning to Google campuses will remain voluntary globally with local offices given the discretion to decide when to require employees to return to their desks, according to the mail written by Sundar Pichai. He specified that the decision was taken keeping in mind the COVID-19 situation persisting around the world.
"I'm happy to say that a large number of offices globally are already open for business, and we are welcoming back tens of thousands of Googlers on a voluntary basis," Google CEO said.
After January 10, 2022, Google will allow individual countries to determine when to end the voluntary work-from-home option based on local conditions. He also made it clear that Google workers would be given a 30-day heads-up before they would have to return to their offices.
Sundar Pichai announced that the Google employees would be able to take off an extra day in October and December as 'reset days' to 'rest and recharge'. Besides Google, several other tech giants like Facebook have also delayed plans for workers to return to the campuses.
Meanwhile in India, the Karnataka government has requested IT companies situated in Outer Ring Road of Bengaluru to extend the Work From Home (WFH) period till December 2022 due to the commencement of the Metro Construction work on the stretch.
