Ragsdale was a holdover from Barack Obama's administration.

Earlier today, Trump had fired the federal government's top lawyer Sally Yates after she took the extraordinarily rare step of defying the White House and saying the Justice Department would not defend his new travel restrictions targeting seven Muslim-majority nations.

As per AFP news, Thomas Homan will be taking up the position acting US immigration and customs chief.

Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly said Homan will help, "ensure that we enforce our immigration laws in the interior of the United States consistent with the national interest."
