This year, out of the 60 cities listed in the entire study, two cities from India also secured a spot. India’s capital New Delhi landed the 48th spot in the study while Mumbai secured the 50th spot. This year, the safest city in the United States is New York, which secured the 11th spot in the study.
The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) conducts the survey to determine the safest city in the world every two years. During the last study in 2019, Tokyo reserved the top spot as the safest city in the world, followed by Singapore and Osaka at the second and third spots.
To prepare the list of safest cities in the world, EIU has ranked 60 cities based on 76 parameters. These parameters include digital, health, infrastructure, personal, and environmental security. All the cities have been given different scores in these five parameters and finally, graded on a score out of 100.
This year, the EIU also took the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic into consideration while ranking the cities. The report issued by EIU states that the pandemic has "changed the whole concept of urban safety” and has shifted a lot of focus towards the digital security sector.
