US spy planes targeted two militant hideouts in the restive North Waziristan tribal region of northwest Pakistan today, killing six suspected militants, officials said.

The strike was second within 24 hours. Eighteen terrorists were killed yesterday in the tribal region in a similar attack.

The drones fired four missiles at two houses in Ghulam Khan, a border village located 20 km from Miranshah, the headquarters of North Waziristan Agency today.

The area is considered a hub of Taliban and al-Qaeda operatives. This was the second drone strike in the region since yesterday.

The CIA-operated spy planes have carried out over 100 strikes in the lawless tribal belt bordering Afghanistan this year.

The attacks were stepped up following intelligence reports that militants based in the tribal areas were planning to carry out attacks on major European cities.
