In a letter to his family and close friends, Bo compared his plight to that of his father, Bo Yibo, and wrote 'My father was jailed many times. I will follow his footsteps', the Independent reports. The letter came just two days before Bo is due to be sentenced for corruption and abuse of power.

Analysts said he is likely to be jailed for less than 15 years and will appeal. His wife, Gu Kailai, was convicted of murdering British businessman Neil Heywood and his ex-police chief Wang Lijun was also jailed for 15 years for defection, power abuse and bribe-taking.

His deceased father, Bo Yibo, was amongst the last group of Communist Party leaders who consolidated their power in the 1980s and 1990s, oversaw the Tiananmen Square massacre and are popularly known as the 'Eight Immortals'.
