The Labour MP says that she has faced several such incidents in the Parliament.
A black Labour Party MP, Dawn Butler, said that she faced racism in Westminster when she was apparently mistaken for a cleaner by a fellow MP.
While talking to BBC, Butler said that she was standing in a members-only lift when an anonymous Commons member told her that the lift was "not for cleaners."
the 46-year-old woman said that she became a member of parliament in the year 2008 and was elected again in the year 2015. She said that she has faced many such incidents of racism over the years during her time in the Parliament.
Recalling another incident, Butler had written in an article in the Fawcett Society in 2008 that she was once asked by a former minister whether she was allowed to be in the members area of the terrace. When Butler told him that she was a member, he responded with, "They're letting anybody in nowadays."
Commenting on the incident, former London mayor Ken Livingston said that the manner in which Butler was treated was "ridiculous" as "she was elected years ago." Livingston also said that Butler also "gets up and speaks" in the chamber, BBC reported.
