Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s kin is among 290 people who were killed in the Sunday bombing attacks on hotels and churches in Sri Lanka.

Hasina’s cousin Sheikh Selim’s daughter Sheikh Sonia was on a vacation to Sri Lanka along with her husband Mashiul Haque Chowdhury and two kids.

At the time of the blast at the Shangri-La hotel, the family was having a meal at the hotel restaurant.

The blast left Sonia’s husband Mashiul Haque Chowdhury seriously injured and her eight-year-old sob Zayan Chowdhury missing.

While Mashiul Haque Chowdhury was rushed to the hospital by the local authorities Zayan was confirmed dead soon after.

The Bangladesh Industries Minister Nurul Majid Mahmood Humayun confirmed to reporters in Dhaka that the eight-year-old grandson of Sheikh Selim, Zayan Chowdhury died in the blast.

“Zayan’s dead body will be brought to Bangladesh from Sri Lanka tomorrow,” Humayun told reporters in Dhaka.

However, the son-in-law of Sheikh Salim, Mashiul Haque Chowdhury will remain hospitalised in the Sri Lankan Hospital until his condition improves.

Dozens of foreign nationals have been killed in the series of blasts, which targeted Catholic church worshippers on Easter Sunday as well as luxury hotels in Colombo.

The blasts targeted St Anthony's Church in Colombo, St Sebastian's Church in the western coastal town of Negombo and another church in the eastern town of Batticaloa around 8.45 am (local time) as the Easter Sunday mass were in progress.

Three explosions were reported from the five-star hotels - the Shangri-La, the Cinnamon Grand and the Kingsbury.

Sheikh Hasina had on Sunday expressed her deep concerns over the explosions. In the message, she prayed for peace and salvation of the departed souls and offered her condolences to the grieving families. Hasina also hoped for a quick recovery of the injured.
