Trump also came down heavily on his predecessor Barack Obama saying that his administration made a "terrible" deal with Iran.

"Iran is failing at every level despite the terrible deal made with them by the Obama Administration. The great Iranian people have been repressed for many years. They are hungry for food & for freedom. Along with human rights, the wealth of Iran is being looted. TIME FOR CHANGE," Trump tweeted.

His remarks come at a time when the nationwide protest in Iran has brought a major challenge for the leadership since pro-reform unrest in 2009.

The country-wide demonstrations have drawn in tens of thousands of people and have resulted in at least 10 deaths.

Protesters say they are angry over corruption and economic hardship in Iran where youth unemployment reached 28.8% last year.
