The head of the Indonesian search team has pulled the plug on the search operation to locate remaining dead bodies of victims from AirAsia plane crash in the Java Sea, a report said.

Bambang Soelistyo said that the operation ended on Tuesday night and the ships involved will be pulled out on Wednesday, the BBC reported.

AirAsia lost all contact with flight QZ 8501 on December 28 while it was flying from Surabaya in Indonesia to Singapore with 162 people on board.

The search team retrieved 106 bodies, with 56 unaccounted for. The victims' families were disappointed but said that they understand that the search cannot go on forever.
