There was no immediate report on casualties.

Youqib Khan, the deputy police chief in Khost province, said the attack happened in the city of Khost near Camp Chapman on Sunday, which still houses US forces.

Khan says foreign troops have blocked off all access to the area where the attack happened. NATO says it was aware of an "explosion" in Khost, without elaborating. US officials could not be immediately reached for comment.

The bombing comes after US and NATO troops formally ended their combat mission in Afghanistan at the end of last year, leaving the country's security in the hands of local forces.
