9-year-old Indian-American girl wows the Obamas with 'garam masala' burger
Almost 1,000 recipes were submitted from around the US to the White House annual Kid's State Dinner contest. Shreya's burger was the winning recipe from Illinois.
A nine-year-old Indian American girl, wowed the Obamas when she served them a garam masala quinoa burger with raita, at the White House annual Kid's State Dinner event.
Shreya Patel, from Schaumburg, Illinois, was among 55 young cooks who attended the event, now in its fouth year.
The challenge for the children was to create a healthy lunch recipe, reported the Chicago Tribune. The Kids' State Dinner contest was open to children aged between 8 to 12. Almost 1,000 recipes were submitted from around the US. Shreya's burger was the winning recipe from Illinois.
Patel dined with First Lady Michelle Obama and the other guests in the East Room on July 10.
“I have watched my mom and grandma make all sorts of delicious food in the kitchen with an Indian twist since I was born,” says Shreya. “I have been helping them cook since I was three. I love to mix, measure, chop, and even clean up afterwards. My grandma and I came up with this recipe together because we both love sandwiches. We make this recipe often to take to school for lunch or even on picnics with friends,” said Shreya on www.letsmove.gov.
