Democrat Joe Biden captured the US presidency on Saturday, several major television networks said, as voters narrowly rebuffed Republican incumbent Donald Trump`s tumultuous leadership and embraced Biden's promise to fight the coronavirus pandemic and fix the economy in a divided nation.

When the former vice president enters the White House on Jan. 20, the oldest person to assume the office, he will face a difficult task governing in a deeply polarized Washington, underscored by a record nationwide voter turnout in a fight to the finish.

His projected victory came after four days of nail-biting suspense over the outcome of Tuesday's election, with the counting of votes in a handful of battleground states ongoing thanks to a flood of mail-in ballots. Biden said on Friday he expected to win the race but stopped short of giving a victory speech.

Biden had a 273 to 214 lead in the state-by-state Electoral College vote that determines the winner, having won Pennsylvania`s 20 electoral votes to put him over the 270 he needed to secure the presidency, according to Edison Research.

At 78, he will become the oldest president of America, by the time of his inauguration.

Political career:

Biden's political career kickstarted during the Nixon administration. He served as the United States senator for Delaware from 1973 to 2009, becoming the longest-serving senator from there.

He launched his political career in 1972 and became the fifth-youngest senator in US history in the same year. He sworn into office at age 30 on January 3, 1973.

Biden made his first presidential bid in June 1987 but withdrew his candidacy after a controversy over a speech. But unfortunately, his health declined due to a life-threatening brain aneurysm. He underwent two surgeries and took a seven-month leave from the Senate.

Again in 2008, after 20 years, Biden ran again for President but lost in the primaries for Democratic nomination, to Obama. However, Obama picked him as his running mate, and the duo went on to defeat their Republican opponents, John McCain and Sarah Palin, and again in 2012, defeating Republican challenger Mitt Romney and his running mate Paul Ryan.

In 2015, he did not file his nomination for the presidential primaries candidate as his son Beau died due to brain cancer.

on April 25, 2019, Biden announced his candidacy in the 2020 Democratic presidential primaries, and after toughing it out with 28 other challengers, he won the official Democratic Party nominee on August 17, 2020, and picked Kamala Harris as his running mate.

After defeating Donald Trump and his running mate Mike Pence, Biden is set to become the 46th President of the United States.

Major achievements in his political career spanning more than four decades include:1986: Sponsored one of the first climate change bills in the Senate, 2007: Proposed curbing greenhouse gas emissions, 2008: Passed the PROTECT Our Children Act aimed at safeguarding children's safety online, 2010: Spearheaded Prez Obama's Tax Relief Act, the Budget Control Act of 2011, and the American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012

Personal tragedies:

After he became the fifth-youngest senator in US history in 1972, a few weeks later Biden lost his wife Neilia and one-year-old daughter Naomi in a car crash, and his two sons, Hunter and Beau were seriously injured.

It is well known that after the death of his first wife and daughter, Biden wanted to suspend his political career but he was later persuaded to  join the Senate in 1973.

Then in 2015 one of those two boys, Beau, died of brain cancer at the age of 46.
