Philippines: Explosion in President Duterte's home city during his presence, death toll rises to 12

An explosion took place at night market in Davao city around 11 PM, cause of blast unknown.

On Friday night a little before 11 (GMT +8), a blast ripped through a night market in Davao city.

Though, the cause of the explosion is still unknown, reports state that around 10 people have been killed, while 60 were left injured.

Police and emergency personnel rushed to the spot to attend to the injured and to examine the cause of blast.

  • According to AP, death toll has risen to 12. 

  • Vice Mayor Paolo Duterte confirms the death of five men and five women.

  • Presidential spokesman Ernesto Abella, described the blast as an "unspecified explosion". "There is nothing definite about it but it has resulted in the death of 10 persons, at least 10 persons, and injury of about 60." 

  • The blast took place outside the high-end Marco Polo hotel in Davao. At least 30 people have been taken to hospital.

  • President Rodrigo Duterte is safe at a police station after the blast.

  • According to CNN Philippines, Vice Mayor Duterte said they are yet to confirm the cause of explosion. He also added that Davao City is not on lockdown.
