During the Mughal period, many rulers married Hindu princesses.
One Mughal ruler, Emperor Akbar, abstained from eating non-veg three days a week out of respect for his Hindu Begum.
Akbar's abstinence included Thursdays, Fridays, Sundays, the first of every month, March, and October.
Abul Fazal noted in his book Ain-e-Akbari that Akbar was unique in this practice among Mughal rulers.
On these days, Akbar consumed only curd and rice.
Similarly, Jahangir, another Mughal emperor, also refrained from eating meat every Sunday and Thursday.
Jahangir's wife was also Hindu, and it is likely he observed these dietary restrictions in her honor.
This practice extended beyond the court, with common people encouraged to avoid meat on these days.
