The man was in the middle of the blue sea off the coast of Sydney in Australia, trying to keep an aggressive mako shark from striking with the help of a spear gun. It would have been a matter of time before exhaustion would have kicked in and that would have meant an unfortunate end.

But the swimmer was spotted by an amateur drone pilot looking for some good oceanic photography, from a balcony at the famed Bondi Beach. The pilot who goes by the name Matt Woods, told Daily Mail, “I spotted the shark straight away as there was a big bait ball of fish and as I got closer I could see it was also circling the diver in the water. The diver was fending the shark off and poking it with his spear gun. The shark then went after his float that is attached to the diver. He was charging it and trying to bite it, thrashing it about.”

As soon as he saw the man fighting for his life, Woods alerted local lifeguards, all the while continuing to monitor the situation via the encircling drone’s camera. The shark was aggressive and relentless. With the help of the drone, Woods guided the lifeguards to the location of the swimmer.

It reportedly took around 30 minutes before the lifeguards were able to clear the area and reach the location on jet ski to scare the sharks away. The lifeguards were then able to extract the swimmer.
