The annual Swiggy data brought some interesting trends to life. Biryani was on top with a staggering 83 million orders, translating into 158 orders every minute, which means that more than two biryanis were ordered each second!
In 2024, a man from Bengaluru gained notoriety after he shelled out a whopping ₹49,900 for pasta, according to data from food major Swiggy. Insights released by the Economic Times give a glimpse into peculiarities of what has changed in terms of food orders from record-breaking spans on the kinds of orders taken to amusing behaviors by consumers.
The annual Swiggy data brought some interesting trends to life. Biryani was on top with a staggering 83 million orders, translating into 158 orders every minute, which means that more than two biryanis were ordered each second! Dosa came in second with 23 million orders, affirming its breakfast and snack status. When it came to desserts, Rasmalai and Sitaphal ice cream made their mark and were delivered in record time—sometimes even within 10 minutes!
Dinner was no surprise, becoming the number one mealtime with 215 million orders, 29% more than lunch. In terms of regional food preferences, it was a craze for Chole Bhature in Delhi, Aloo Parantha in Chandigarh, and Kachoris in Kolkata.
Of the interesting highlights was the speed at which deliveries were made: for instance, ice cream reaching a customer in Bikaner in just three minutes, thanks to Swiggy Bolt. Insnacks, Chicken Roll scored highly with 2.48 million orders, whereas the Chicken Burger became a craving for customers in-demand late at night, especially between midnight and 2 AM, with 1.84 million orders. Awfully rare was the case where a customer in Delhi ordered 250 Onion Pizzas in one go!
The delivery partners for Swiggy traversed close to 1.96 billion kilometers in 2024, the distance being equivalent to over 533,000 trips from Kashmir to Kanyakumari. Among some of the best-performing delivery partners were Kapil Kumar Pandey from Mumbai, who completed 10,703 deliveries, and Kaleeswari M from Coimbatore, who himself made 6,658 deliveries.
On the dining front, Swiggy Dineout gained favor among 22 million diners, who saved ₹533 crore, with the top savings squeezed out of Bengaluru diners alone—₹101 crore. Actual savings per diner averaged ₹708, capping at ₹672 last year. The highest single bill? An insane ₹3 lakh by a diner in Mumbai while the top saver—Delhi customer—swept home an extraordinary ₹1.22 lakh in just one order.
By region, Bengaluru led with 289,000 alcohol deliveries, way ahead of fellow national capital Delhi with 96,000. Such a huge increase in couple dining saw 2.35 million "just the two of us" reservations, with Bengaluru (486K) and Jaipur (64K) taking the lead. Finally, Swiggy's Great Indian Restaurant Festival was a great success, saving diners ₹228 crore over two seasons.
