NASA shared a pic of a former Indian-American intern belonging to Hindu faith while inviting applications for new interns. Here's what happened next.
While inviting applications for new internship positions, United States’ space agency NASA recently posted photographs of some of its former interns on Twitter, in a bid to showcase the diversity of individuals in its service.
One of the images was that of an Indian American girl. In the photograph, she was sitting on a desk with a laptop and sporting a pullover with the NASA logo. Sculptures and posters of Hindu Gods and Goddesses can be seen the background.
NASA had never expected what happened next. Trolls quickly caught hold of the post, implying that NASA shouln't be hiring someone who believes in God to work in a scientific organisation. Some of comments reportedly xenophobic in nature.
Trolls slammed the fact that the Indian-origin intern had kept religious idols in her workspace. Some attempted to ridicule NASA for sharing a “stereotypical image of an Indian girl.”
However, the trolls are now the ones in the eye of a Twitter storm. Several netizens came out in support for the former intern and stated that keeping Hindu idols beside her while working for NASA was completely okay.
"So many people exposing their casual bigotry & racism.... while dissing on a minority Girl.. all because she's proud of her roots,” said one of the users.
