The Gaekwads, former rulers of Baroda, still hold a place of great respect among the local people. The family is currently led by HRH Samarjitsinh Gaekwad and his wife Radhikaraje Gaekwad.

The luxurious Laxmi Vilas Palace, featuring over 170 rooms, was built by Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III in 1890, at a cost of about GBP 180,000 at the time. The palace also includes a golf course.
Radhikaraje Gaekwad, an avid reader and writer, earned her Master's degree in Indian History from Lady Shri Ram College, Delhi University. Prior to her marriage to Maharaja Samarjitsinh Gaekwad in 2002, she worked as a journalist. Samarjitsinh Gaekwad was crowned Maharaja of Baroda in a traditional ceremony at Laxmi Vilas Palace in 2012.
