Hundreds of gold coins were found hidden in the walls of a French mansion that is due to go under auction later this month. The auction house tasked with selling the treasure said that 239 coins were found by three craftsmen who were working on the restoration of the mansion in Plozévet, Brittany, near Quimper in 2019, reported news agency AFP.

The coins were minted before the French revolution during the reigns of Louis XIII and Louis XIV, according to auctioneers Ivoire

The stonemasons, who were hired by the owners to unite the three buildings of the property,  found the coins in a metal box in a wall.

The mansion's owner, Francois Mion told AFP, "The box was embedded in the wall, stuck between stones."

More coins were found in a pouch hidden above a wooden beam a few days later, he said.

The coins, found in 2019, were reported only now after the owners tasked the auction house with selling the treasure, AFP reported. The treasure includes a very rare coin depicting Louis XIV dating back to 1646, which is valued at 15,000 euros. The coins also include several Louis d'Or and double Louis d'Or.

The coins probably constituted the savings of a rich trader or landowner, said Florian D'Oysonville, an expert at Ivoire, reported news agency AFP.

This should be noted that all archaeological finds belong to the state if discovered on a private property acquired after mid-2016, according to French law. However, the couple acquired the mansion in 2012, thus, they are authorised to sell the treasure on their own, reported AFP.
