Meet IAS officer Renu Raj, who quit her job as doctor to crack UPSC exam

Every Indian household is filled with the dream of having at least one IAS officer in the family. Though it is not easy at all, there are some people who make it look like a calk walk. One such person is Renu Raj. She is a resident of Kottayam, Kerala, and she cracked the UPSC exam in her first attempt and ranked second in the country. She had left medicine practice to pursue this. In her nearly 10-month term, Renu Raj has strictly acted against illegal constructions and land encroachments in the hill station of Munnar.

Renu Raj received her early education from St. Teresa's Higher Secondary School in Kottayam, Kerala and then studied medicine from the Government Medical College, Kottayam.

Renu Raj conquered the UPSC exam in 2014 and became an IAS officer by securing the second rank in her first attempt. She already had a medical degree while she appeared for the UPSC exam. Renu's father is a retired government employee and her mother is a housewife. Both Renu's sisters and her husband are doctors by profession.

Renu Raj wanted to become an IAS officer since childhood. While she was working as a surgeon, she realised that she wanted to do something for the common people and make their life better and decided to become an IAS officer.

Along with practising medicine, Renu Raj used to study for 3-6 hours every day for the UPSC exam since 2013. She did this initially for seven or eights months but decided to give it her full time. Although after the Mains exam, Reny again started her medical practice which reduced her study time by three-four hours, she did not let it affect her preparation.
