'Twas the night of upsets in many ways. While Game of Thrones claimed back their yellow metal after sitting out for a year, it was Amazon series The Marvelous Mrs Maisel that took everyone by surprise to win all the awards in the comedy categories except for two that went to Henry Winkler and Bill Hader for their work on HBO show Barry.
In the race to win, streaming services Netflix and Amazon outshone cable and network channels. With the help of The Crown, Black Mirror and Godless Netflix made some headway and tied up with HBO for winning 23 awards each that also include Creative Arts Emmys. Barry, Game of Thrones and Last Week Tonight with John Oliver helped HBO.
Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story became the second season of Ryan Murphy's anthology series that won accolades for FX. Their People vs OJ Simpson started the winning streak that had continued with debut season of Feud last year. With Ryan Murphy moving to Netflix, Emmys shall be a different ballgame for the streaming giant in coming years. FX comedy by Donald Glover -- Atlanta -- surprisingly had to go home with no awards this year. Same was the case with dystopian drama The Handmaid's Tale that won nada.
RuPaul's Drag Race and Saturday Night Live picked up one award each.

Game of Thrones, as expected, won the best drama series award!
Outstanding comedy series
The Marvelous Mrs Maisel sweeps it for Amazon Prime Video. Another comedy brings glory to the streaming service after Mozart in the Jungle in their breakthrough year.
The show already picked up best actress, best supporting actress, best writing, and best directing awards.
Outstanding drama series
Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story won the award.
This is the second win for the anthology series created by Ryan Murphy. Their People vs OJ Simpson was also honoured in their debut year.
Outstanding variety talk series
Reigning champs, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, win once again. To nobody's surprise.
Oliver thanked Glenn Weiss' girlfriend for saying yes and not making the occasion awkward for anyone.
Outstanding variety sketch show
Saturday Night Live wins this award. They are set to start their season 44 on September 29.
Outstanding reality competition program
Rick and Morty presented the award to RuPaul for his show RuPaul's Drag Race.
Rick and Morty did a better job of telling the history of the Emmys than what Maya Rudolph and Fred Armisen are trying to do.

Outstanding actress in a drama series
Claire Foy wins the trophy for playing Queen Elizabeth II on Netflix drama The Crown.
This was Foy's last appearance on the show. Olivia Colman will take the baton now.
Outstanding actor in a drama series
Matthew Rhys won this trophy for his work on The Americans.
It's the second award of the night for the period drama set in the cold war era.
Hannah Gadsby brings back memories of her Netflix special Nannette and men in the room are handed the gift of truth.
Outstanding directing for a drama series
Stephen Daldry wins the trophy for his work on The Crown.
Outstanding writing for a drama series
Joel Field and Joe Weisberg win the trophy for their work on The Americans.
Outstanding supporting actress in drama series
Another big one for HBO. Sci-fi show Westworld picks up their first award of the night in Thandie Newton.

The show has begun with a musical number touching topics from #MeToo movement to diversity on Television. Sandra Oh was celebrated and Andy Samberg was the punching bag. The opening skit is very much like what you see on Saturday Night Live. It should not come as a surprise given SNL producer Lorne Michaels is helming this one too.
