Magic Leap is perhaps one of the most secretive tech startups out there, with its allure largely stemming from their apparently fantastic implementations of augmented reality. From ‘interacting’ with virtual creations as part of a simulated game running right in your living room, to Avatar-like holographic projections that seem to spring out of thin air, the company hints at fantastic examples of interactive technology.

However apart from the handful of demos that regularly come out of the company every now and again, they have continued to shy away from stating exactly what it is they will be launching, much less by when. But the industry has been observing each of their demos keenly, if only because the company is backed by investments from titans such as Google, Qualcomm, Alibaba, and Legendary Entertainment.

At a recent demonstration to Alibaba, the company showed how shopping could get way more interactive, with animated characters that seem to hover right in the space in front of the shopper. With the demo being in Mandarin, it’s not clear precisely what is being demonstrated here, but at one point the person giving the demonstration indicated that the experience would involve wearing some sort of eyewear.
