Endless runners are not new to the smartphone gaming scene. Temple Run was keeping the bored and listless of humanity occupied a long time before Subway Surfer ever made it to the ultra small screen. So what does Red Head Redemption have to offer then? Well for starters, it’s an extension of popular meme website 9gag.com.

While it’s a solid game in and of itself, Red Head Redemption won’t look particularly unique to the average gamer. However, to a 9gag fan, there are little nods and fan service features all over the place. The name, for instance, is a play on the website’s obsession with attractive female redheads. Cats show up throughout the plot, and can be recruited as helpers.. The weapons are all reminiscent of themes that have, at one time or another, popped up on 9gag, (Potato gun anyone?), and modified versions of popular memes show up between levels. If none of this makes sense to you, fear not; it just means you haven’t wasted your life away simply scrolling down screens and snickering to yourself (unlike me).

And the game premise itself is loopy. “Mom” and “Dad” have to pull an unexpected weekend shift at the secret lab facility, so little May has to babysit her brother George…...when the zombies attack! Not one to worry too much, May straps her brother onto her back and follows your command, running away from the zombies, while baby George pulls out a couple of dual Magnums from his diaper and proceeds to blast the undead to smithereens.

When it comes down to it, Red Head Redemption can be fun, but not if you’ve played a lot of similar games. The only thing making this game stand out from the crowd a little bit are the inside jokes every 9gag follower will be sure spot and guffaw at.
