At 1:45 am (IST) this morning, NASA astronaut Tim Kopra assumed command of the International Space Station (ISS) from astronaut Scott Kelly in a traditional Change of Command ceremony. That's because at 9:55 am (IST tomorrow, Kelly and Russian astronauts Mikhail Kornienko and Sergey Volkovwill be touching down on Earth once more. Expedition 47 will officially begin under Kopra’s command when the Soyuz spacecraft carrying the three cosmonauts undocks from the space station.
Kelly and Kornienko are part of a research effort aboard the ISS, studying the effects of prolonged spaceflight on the human body. Kelly currently holds the US record for most time spent in space (520 days) and most consecutive days spent in space by a United States astronaut (216 days).
