Instagram feature: Step-by-step guide to mute a contact on the Facebook-owned app

Facebook-owned app Instagram is one of the most popular social media apps. It was recently also listed as the third most downloaded app not only on the Google Play Store but also the Apple App Store. 

To keep its popularity going and users engaged, Instagram often comes up with features to improve the experience of the user on the photo-sharing app. One such significant feature is a user being able to mute a contact whose posts they do not wish to see on their timeline. 

Muting someone on Instagram is different from unfollowing them as when you mute a contact, you don't see their stories or Instagram posts, however, the muted contact can sift through your profile and posts easily. 

The most important aspect of this Instagram feature is that the muted contact is not informed about the choice you made. So, if you have a friend or an acquaintance who you don't want to block but limit on your profile, muting them is the best option. 

Here is a step-by-step guide as to how you can mute a contact on Instagram

Step 1: Open the official Instagram app on your mobile phone 

Step 2: Search the profile that you want to mute in the search bar

Step 3: Click on the profile you want to mute 

Step 4: Click on 'Following' which will divert you towards three options - Mute, Restrict, and Unfollow.

Step 5: Select the Mute button 

Step 6: Mute all posts by selected contact 

Step 7: Select the Stories option and mute them as well.
