The GSAT-14 communication satellite was placed in the geostationary orbit on Thursday as Isro officials at the Master Control Facility in Hassan successfully carried out the third and final orbit raising operation of the satellite. The third orbit raising operation of GSAT-14 was successfully completed by firing the apogee motor for 172 seconds. East and West antennae of GSAT-14 have been deployed successfully at 9.18 am and 11.30 am respectively, said Isro. The GSAT-14 was launched onboard the GSLV-D5 on January 5. It is the 23rd geostationary communication satellite of India built by Isro. The main objectives of mission GSAT-14 are to augment the in-orbit capacity of extended C and Ku-band transponders and provide a platform for new experiments. The mission life of the GSAT-14 is 12 years.Four of GSAT-14’s predecessors were launched by GSLV during 2001, 2003, 2004 and 2007 respectively. After its commissioning, GSAT-14 will join the group of India’s nine operational geostationary satellites. The 12 communication transponders onboard GSAT-14 will further augment the capacity in the INSAT/ GSAT system.
