Google Earth gets a cool new 3-D Time-lapse feature, here's how to use it

A new 3D Timelapse feature has been introduced by Google that allows users to see how different places on Earth has changed over a period of time from 1984 to 2020.

With the help of this Time-lapse feature, users will now be able to see the devastating effects of climate change and how different countries and cities have changed over the years. 

"In the biggest update to Google Earth since 2017, you can now see our planet in an entirely new dimension -- time," Rebecca Moore, Director, Google Earth, Earth Engine & Outreach, said in a blog post.

”With Timelapse in Google Earth, 24 million satellite photos from the past 37 years have been compiled into an interactive 4D experience. Now anyone can watch time unfold and witness nearly four decades of planetary change," Moore added.

“As you fly through Google Earth, the landscape underneath you is effortlessly animating over these four decades. And now billions of people around the world can experience this from their web browser or even their phones,” she said.

To use the Time-lapse feature on Google Earth, users can go to g.co/Timelapse or open Google Earth and click on the ship’s wheel to find Timelapse in storytelling platform, Voyager, to see interactive guided tours. 

“We’ve also uploaded more than 800 Timelapse videos in both 2D and 3D for public use at g.co/TimelapseVideos," the company said. 

"You can select any video you want as a ready-to-use MP4 video or sit back and watch the videos on YouTube," it added.
