Facebook chooses India to launch added features to 'stories'

Facebook on Wednesday announced several new updates for its Indian consumer, following which the updates will be part of Facebook’s global platform, it was announced.
According to Connor Hayes, the director of product management at Facebook, the three main features that will be added to Facebook stories in India are the ability to save photographs taken on the Facebook camera without saving it on your device, voice recording for stories, and creating a story archive.
For the first, one can take pictures using the Facebook camera and while the user is given the option of saving images, s/he can choose from saving the photograph in the gallery or in Facebook itself.
While addressing a media briefing, Hayes said that the voice recording for stories is similar to the recording voice that Facebook-owned WhatsApp has. “We noticed that a number of users were using WhatsApp to record messages when they didn’t feel like typing. We have incorporated a similar feature for Facebook stories, especially when a person is travelling. The user can use a plain background or a photograph that exists in the Facebook archive or something s/he has taken,” he added.
The third feature is archiving Facebook stories. Earlier the stories would automatically be removed after 24 hours, but now the user has the option of archiving the stories and using them later as either a story or as a picture that they can share on their newsfeed.
Explaining the reason they chose India first, Hayes said that one of the main studies the Facebook team found was the number of families that shared one phone. “In one device, a number of pictures could be saved and it could belong to X or Y. Adding the option of using the Facebook camera increases an individual’s privacy when it comes to saving an image,” he said.
Given that data breach has been in the news, and Facebook has been in the midst of the Cambridge Analytica row, Hayes also said that the features can only be seen by the profile owner and there will be no data breach when it comes to leaking information.
