Five lesser known and useful WhatsApp features you must know

While many of WhatsApp’s features are known to everybody, there are some features on the app that are lesser known but can help surely be helpful.

Over the years WhatsApp has become an integral part of our lives. Not only does it help to communicate with friends and family, but it is also very useful for students and office going people with its features like message forwarding, group texting, etc. Even though WhatsApp has been facing flak over privacy issues in the recent past but it still holds and edge over other messaging platforms like Telegram and Signal. Bundled with various features, WhatsApp makes a user think twice before switching to another platform. While many of WhatsApp’s features are known to everybody, there are some features on the app that are lesser known but can help surely be helpful to you.

When someone sends you a message and you read it, the ticks on the sender’s side will turn blue, indicating them that you’ve read the message. It can be problematic at times but did you know that you can turn the blue tick off? All you need to do is turn off your ‘Read Receipts.’ To do this, on your WhatsApp, open ‘Settings’, then click on ‘Account’, further in the ‘Privacy’ section you can turn off the ‘Read Receipts.’

There are various apps for payment purposes like Paytm, Googlepay and PhonePe. But did you know that you can even pay and receive money via WhatsApp and in a hassle-free manner? For this, go to ‘Settings’ and click on ‘Payments’ option. There you can add a ‘Payment method, i.e, your account details and you are good to go.

Users put their best photos as profile picture but sometimes a user doesn’t want to show his/her profile picture to everyone. WhatsApp gives an option to hide the profile picture. For this go to ‘Settings’ on WhatsApp and then click on. ‘Privacy’ option. Here you will find three options with 'Everyone', 'My contacts' and 'Nobody'. You can select an option of your choice.

In WhatsApp, your photos and videos get automatically downloaded and saved on your phone’s gallery. This can lead to a lack of storage space in the device and the user has to delete photos and videos manually. To avoid this, go to ‘Settng’ and choose the ‘Storage and Data’ option. Under the ‘Media auto-download’ option there will be options for downloading media files in phone, WiFi, and roaming. All the boxes have to be untouched by just tapping into them and then the auto-download will be off.

Did you know that you can reply to a message in group chats privately? There is an option on WhatsApp where a user can send a message to another user privately in a group chat. For this, press and hold any group message, then tap the ‘More’ option and click on ‘Reply Privately.’
