Popular messaging app WhatsApp has started rolling out its new voice and video call feature for the desktop to some users. The new features would allow WhatsApp users to make calls through their desktop app. It was limited earlier to just the WhatsApp available on mobile phones.

It is reported that the new update available to a select few desktop users is in its beta stage and that is why it is not available to many at this point of time.

WhatsApp feature tracker WABetaInfo reported that some users of WhatsApp desktop started seeing options for voice and video calls on the chat header.

WhatsApp earlier said that it was going to bring voice and video calls for both its desktop and web users. As of now, the limited rollout is limited to its desktop client only.

Those users of WhatsApp desktop client who can see and access the voice and video call buttons will be able to make and receive their calls now on the desktop. According to reports, a pop-up window appears to let the users accept or reject a call on the desktop.

The status of an ongoing call can be checked through another pop-up window, say the reports.

Even though this new offering of WhatsApp will allow its users to make and receive calls through their desktop, it would still require the phone to be connected to the WhatsApp desktop app. It is similar to how the connection is required to check messages on WhatsApp on the desktop and the web.

It is to be noted that the new call features for WhatsApp desktop client are in the testing phase currently and are not available to all.

WhatsApp is one of the market leaders when it comes to the call feature on mobile devices. It had brought its voice call feature in 2015 and the video call feature in 2016.
