Micromax YU Yuphoria Launch: Everything you need to know
We were at the New Delhi launch of the Micromax YU Yuphoria today and it was quite the deal maker. A new, ultra-cheap smartphone, a fitness band and a steal of a medical tracker. Get all the juicy bits below.
Micromax sub brand YU launched their latest smartphone in New Delhi today, the Yuphoria. We've seen leaks and rumours in the past couple of weeks, but a few things are clear now. The Yuphoria is an all metal-body smartphone, which seems to have traded off in the performance sector to balance that cost. Smaler than the Yureka, cheaper processor and camera, and smaller battery; only time will tell if the decision was a good one. But in the meantime, there's more than just a phone to attract us with sparkly goodness. Meet the YuFit, a fitness band, and the HealthYu, a medical tracker that can measure your ECG, among many other things.
And that's the end of the Yuphoria launch event. Mostly expected revelations, but quite a few surprises there at the end. Looking forward to getting our hands on all three devices for an in-depth review. Speaking of in-depth, stay tuned to our tech page for a hands-on first impression of the Yuphoria.
The HealthYu will be available from next month. And it costs Rs 4,999. Wait...what? Seriously? That's it?
Taking an assistant's ECG readings in real time. Holy Hell.
Hello, here's something new. A strange picture on the screen titled HEALTHYU.
The YuFit band will cost Rs 999. Seems like these guys paid close attention to the Mi4i launch and its MiBand pricing too.
Free personal trainer for the first 1000 YuFit users. Yes, I mean YU, fattie.
Besides the standard step tracker, sleep tracker, and phoone finding, the YUFIT app is tied up with HealthifyMe app. You can click a picture of your food and it calculates your calorie intake for that meal. Even suggests a healthier alternative. Sounds like my doting grandmother tied to my back.
Yep. YU is launching the YuFit band, with an accompanying app.
Rahul Sharma talking about health stats in India now. Are they going to release a fitness band as well, like at the Xiaomi launch?
It's official. The Yuphoria is being priced at Rs 6,999. Wow. Definitely scaled down from the Yureka's abilities, but it's still quite the bang for your buck. No wonder all the scrimping measures. This is going to give the smartphone market another right good shake.
I have a sneaky suspicion that metal body cost more than acceptable. Cheaper processor, camera, smaller battery. It all seems like desperate attempts to offset some other costs (*cough* buffed metal *cough*)
App themer lets you change the look of any stock android apps with a simple press of a button. Cyanogen has always been about customization, among other things, so no big surprise here.
That it does. The Yureka had a 2500mAh battery. Why downsize something that worked?
"We're introducing an app themer into the phone for the first time."
To compare, the Yureka had a 13MP f/2.2 rear cam. Add this to the fact that it's screen is 5" as opposed to Yureka's 5.5", and a cheaper Snapdragon 410 compared to the 615, is the Yuphoria going to cost close to the Yureka's price?
Centrally-aligned 8MP rear cam, f/2.2 with 1.4 micron size
Adreno 306 GPU packed in.
4G LTE compatible with 2GB DDR3 RAM and 16GB internal storage.
64-bit Snapdragon 401 1.2GHz ARM Cortex A53 processor under the hood. Cut to another video. It's strange how this is turning out a bit like a Bollywood movie, with songs every minute.
Every phone will be printed with the words, "Designed by you, Made in India."
The Yuphoria is 8.25mm and weighs 143g, despite the all metal body. Impressive enough so far. The phone will be available in two colours; Buffed Steel with black, and Champagne Gold with white.
three-key design on the right spine; volume rocker on the sides with the power button in the middle. Aux output in the center of the top rim, and Saturn rings around the rear camera. "The Saturn rings will be used in all YU phones from now on."
"We filed four patents during the design of this phone."
"The frame has undergone metal bending, stamping, sandblasting, polishing and anti-finger coating, all learned from the automobile industry."
And the Yuphoria is unveiled, "a miracle in metal"
Another video now, this one enumerating the obstacles to building the phone, all set to dramatic score shot in documentary style. Their AV guys have really gone all out.
It's a 5" phone confirmed, with a metal body.
A phone designed by community polling.

It seems like there's a bit more of a delay. The Yuphoria livestream has a countdown timer at about 15 minutes now so sit tight. You can find the livestream right here.
Hey guys, you're here early. The launch event will begin in a few minutes, so be sure to check back at 12pm for our live updates.
